Description.

This is a Chassepot Model 1866, a French single-shot needle gun that saw service in the French military in the mid-19th Century. It was a marvel for its time replacing muzzleloading rifles with an accurate breach-loading, bolt action design that allowed the use of combustible paper cartridges and eliminated the need to ram during loading.  These rifles saw use outside of France is well when they were sold on contract to Peru, Bolivia, the Brazilian Empire, and Tokugawa Japan.

This rifle represents an early period in military firearm history and is a desirable piece for collectors of 19th-century European rifles.
