Valmet – M62/S – Rifle – 7.62x39mm

Description.

This rifle is the Finnish-made semi-automatic RK 62, commonly referred to as either the 7.62 RK 62 or the M62, and is the current standard issue assault rifle for the Finnish Defense Forces (though not for much longer). Chambered in the 7.62×39 Russian intermediary cartridge, this version comes with the traditional  fixed, accepts the standard 30-round AK magazine, and comes outfitted with a 16.5-inch barrel fitted with a three-pronged flash hider, with an effective range of 300 meters (or 980 feet if you speak American).

Originally designed during the 1950s and early ‘60s, this AK-patterned rifle was designed and jointly produced by Finnish arms manufacturers Valmet and Sako and is based off the Polish-licensed version of the Soviet AK-47 design. While the RK 62 is an AK derivative, it made several notable improvements to the classic Kalashnikov design, including using higher quality milled steel for the receivers, a three-pronged flash hider that can be used to quickly cut barbed wire by simply fitting the prongs onto a strand of wire and firing, a match-grade barrel, and most significantly, the tritium night-sights fitted on the receiver cover instead of the receiver itself.

Collectively, these design improvements doubled the user’s sight radius and significantly improved RK62’s accuracy over the AK-47, with the RK 62 frequently achieving a sub-1 MOA. Additionally, the magazine release and trigger guard were enlarged to allow for more ease of use for operators with gloves. Finally, the RK 62 ditched the traditional wooden furniture from the AK in favor of polymer furniture, creating a more modern aesthetic. Designed to operate in the punishing environmental conditions of Northern Europe, the RK 62 excelled in the field and has served as the standard issue for the Finnish Defense Forces since the mid-1960s and would later be used as the basis for the design of the iconic IMI Galil.

This particular unit was marked with the importers mark of the new defunct InterArms of Alexandria, Virginia (at the factory) but was never ACTUALLY imported into the US before now.

Despite its half-century of success in the field, in October 2025 the Finnish Defense Forces announced the upcoming retirement of the RK 62 and intends to replace it with a 5.56 NATO-chambered rifle, as part of Finland’s plan to switch to NATO-standard calibers for its small arms.
